Black Hawk College is a comprehensive community college with two campuses.
The East Campus in Galva, Illinois, is located on a beautiful 102-acre, rolling hill site
in Henry County. The college is committed to promoting the fields of horticulture and agriculture as career choices and is persistent in its mission to engage the community through increased consciousness of the interconnections of the two industries. The horticulture program offers a diverse curriculum including organic fruit and vegetable production, landscape design and greenhouse production, in addition to numerous other courses, ensuring students the opportunity to explore prospective career
areas as well as achieve academic goals.
Black Hawk Organics
Black Hawk College embraces a universal goal to further awareness and educate as to alternative crops, with special interest in organic food production, and strategies fostering sustainable and community supported agriculture. Program objectives include, but not be limited to, increased awareness of environmental stewardship and organic farming practices, as well as direct student experience in production, marketing and sales.
Educational Diversity and Career Development
Individuals enrolled in the horticulture program are introduced to the diversity of the career field not only through classroom practicum but also direct hands on experiences supporting what they have learned. Students are in addition invited to participate in enhancement activities including an annual trip to Michigan touring the heart of the commercial greenhouse industry in the Midwest, exposure to landscape professionals, state and national educational competitions, and numerous other activities connected to curriculum and student interest.
